During mitosis, which can be subdivided into several phases, the cell undergoes division of the cytoplasm (cytokinesis). The end result is two daughter cells with identical DNA. During mitosis, the cell has one last possibility to break off division if an error has occurred. The M checkpoint is reached during the metaphase of cell division and verifies that all chromosomes are aligned on the spindle apparatus. If everything has occurred correctly, go signals trigger division of the chromosomes and separation of the daughter cells.
