Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides and Sulfones

Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides and Sulfones: Experimental Procedure

Oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide to methyl phenyl sulfoxide. To 210 mL of a 0.5M solution of sodium periodate is added 12.4 g of the sulfide at 0°C . The mixture is stirred overnight in an ice bath. The precipitated sodium iodate is filtered and the sulfoxide is extracted from the filtrate with chloroform. Evaporation of the extract yields the crude sulfoxide.
