Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides and Sulfones

Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides and Sulfones: Introduction

Reaction principle

Sulfides can be very easily oxidized to sulfoxides and sulfones using many oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide, peroxides, nitric acid or sodium periodate. The choice of oxidizing agent determines the outcome of the reaction. The sulfide is either fully oxidized to the sulfone or transformed into a sulfoxide.
