Reduction of Sulfones and Sulfoxides to Sulfides: Introduction

Reaction principle

Sulfones and sulfoxides can be easily reduced to sulfides by heating with sulfur. The reduction of sulfoxides proceeds at lower temperatures.

Sulfoxides can also be easily reduced to sulfides with reducing agents, such as LiAlH4 or NaBH4-FeCl3 . This has to be considered when working with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent. Other than using sulfur, the reduction of sulfones to sulfides can be carried out only with (i-Bu)2AlH . However, some cases of successful reductions with lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4 ) have been reported.

Under certain conditions, the reduction of sulfones to sulfides can be stopped at the sulfoxide stage.
