Reduction of Nitro Compounds to Amines
Reduction of Nitro Compounds to Amines: Mechanism
Initially, the nitro group is reduced to the nitroso group.
The initial step is followed by the reductive addition of two hydrogen atoms to form the hydroxylamine.
The last step is again a reduction; water is eliminated and the amine is isolated.
The reduction of nitro groups with metals in acidic solution cannot be stopped at either the nitroso- or hydroxylamine stage. The final product is the amine, isolated as salt of the acid used.
