Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley Reduktion: Industrial Applications

Industry uses the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reaction to reduce acrolein to allyl alcohol. In place of aluminum isopropoxide, the process involves a heterogeneous catalysis with magnesium oxide and isopropanol as solvent.


Allyl alcohol is an important intermediate in the synthesis of glycerol which is being used for the preparation of polyester resins. These are important feedstocks in the production of explosives and in the cosmetic industry.
