Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of alkenes is syn-stereospecific, i.e. both hydrogen atoms are tranferred to the same side of the π plane. Addition occurs from the less hindered side.
No differentiation is observed if both sides are equal (the π plane is a mirror plane). Enantiope olefins yield the racemate.
Enantioselective catalytic hydrogenation is accomplished with chiral homogeneous catalysts.
