Reduction of Esters to Alcohols via Aldehydes: Introduction

Reaction principle

Complex metal hydrides (e.g. lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4 )) reduce carboxylic esters first to aldehydes and immediately following to the corresponding alcohols. In industry, fatty acid esters are being reduced to alcohols by using hydrogen and copper chromite or ZnO/CuO catalysts.
