Reduction of Amides to Amines: Laboratory Application

Amides are versatile intermediates for the preparation of amines. They can be easily obtained by reaction of acyl halides with amines. Deprotonation of the resulting secondary amides, followed by alkylation, yield tertiary amides which subsequently are reduced to the corresponding amines with lithium aluminum hydride .
