Oxidation of Tertiary Amines to Amine Oxides: Introduction

Reaction principle

Oxidation of tertiary amines to amine oxides is easily carried out with either hydrogen peroxide or peracids. The peroxide is reduced to water and the peracid to the corresponding carboxylic acid.

Application

The main application is the synthesis of alkenes by oxidation of amines followed by Cope elimination.
