Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation: Introduction

Reaction principle

In this reaction, an oxygen atom is formally inserted adjacent to the carbonyl group of the ketone to form an ester. Cyclic ketones form lactones by ring enlargement.

In unsymmetrically substituted ketones, the oxygen atom is inserted between the carbon of the carbonyl group and the higher substituted C atom.
