## Other Epoxidation Methods: Epoxidation with Atmospheric Oxygen

### Preparation of ethylene oxide

Only ethylene can directly be oxidized with oxygen. This method is being used for the large scale industrial synthesis of ethylene oxide. In this method, ethylene is reacted with oxygen in the presence of a silver catalyst at 230$°C$-270$°C$ and 1-2 $MPa$ (10 - 20 $mbar$ ).

Ethylene oxide is a large-volume feedstock in the chemical industry. It is mainly used for the synthesis of ethylene glycol, glycol ethers, non-ionized tensides, and polyester- and polyether alcohols as well.

Under these conditions, propylene and higher olefins are oxidized in the allylic position .
