Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds
Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds: Introduction
Trivial names are more commonly used for aromatic compounds than is the case with other compound families in organic chemistry. Though trivial names are not recommended, IUPAC rules allow their use with common aromatic compounds, such as methylbenzene (toluene), hydroxybenzene (phenol), and aminobenzene (aniline).
Monosubstituted benzene derivatives are named by analogy with other hydrocarbons - with benzene as the parent name.
