What does CHEMGAROO stand for?

CHEMGAROO is composed of two syllables, "Chem" and "garoo". Chem being the prefix of the word chemistry and garoo being the second syllable of the word kangaroo. CHEMGAROO Educational Systems is FIZ CHEMIE's product group for education and further education in the fields of science and engineering.

ChemgaPedia is part of the product group CHEMGAROO Educational Systems, and is probably the most comprehensive curricular chemistry encyclopedia. It contains 15.000 pages, 25.000 media elements, approx. 900 exercises and 2.500 glossary and biographic entries in the fields of chemistry, biology pharmacy, mathematics and physics.

How do I navigate within ChemgaPedia?

The modules are structured into departments and subject groups. You will find the designated module by choosing a subject, department and subject group on the ChemgaPedia home page. All modules are sorted alphabetically.

Why is ChemgaPedia set up in modules (VLUs)?

Structuring the units into VLUs allows a great deal of flexibility. The modules are self-contained, and therefore seperately learnable. Alternatively, different modules can be joined into courses, which are designed to the individual needs of the learner.

What does VLU mean?

ChemgaPedia's content is divided into modules. These modules are called VLUs ("Valid learning Unit"). Every VLU has its own learning target and is linked to related VLUs. All VLUs are supplied with information about the time needed and level of difficulty. They can be viewed seperately, in arbitrary order or multidisciplinary joint to courses.

How do I navigate within the modules?

Once you open a module, you will find a page of contents. It is possible to view seperate pages by using the navigation bar on the left side, or by using "Next" and "Previous" on the top or bottom of the right side.

Are there other navigation options within the modules?

On the page of contents you will find further navigation options. Most of the information is linked, so that you can navigate between the pages. For example from "previous knowledge" to a fundamental learning module, from keyword to glossary. By choosing a keyword/glossary on the page of contents, the flag "module" will inform you about further subject related modules.

How do I browse ChemgaPedia?

ChemgaPedia offers different ways of searching for contents and keywords. The navigation bar on the left side includes a full-text search. Alternatively, you will find highlighted keywords within the text, which will show a glossary definition when clicking on them. Within the glossary window you can navigate to subject related modules by choosing the flag "modules".

What is the tutorial?

The tutorials are a conclusive sequel of modules. Unlike seperate modules within the encyclopedia.

What is the aim of the first page of the module?

The first page of a module, the so called page of contents displays further information about the module itself. Not only does it summarise the module, learning target and information about the author, but it also informs about the requirements, recommendations and keyword crosslinkings.

What can I do, if certain contents cannot be displayed on my computer?

For displaying all media elements, your browser needs certain plugins. ChemgaPedia should display all contents with a minimum installation of plugins. In addition to text and pictures, we use Flash, Shockwave, Chime, VRML, MathML and Real-Videos. The plugin-testpages will inform you about plugins that are already installed, and how to install missing plugins.

Support enquiries have shown, that many companies were not able to display certain applications due to the security settings (Firewall) or the lack of administrative authorisation, which did not allow the installation of plugins. For further information please contact info@chemgaroo.de.
