unit cellZoomA-Z

Subject - General Chemistry

Illustration of the formation of a crystal lattice through the repetition of a unit cell in the x, y, and z directions.

A unit cell is the smallest unit of a crystal lattice. It predicts the lattice points in the crystal. A crystal can be viewed as a three-dimensional array of unit cells.

This approach is purely crystallographic and geometric and not chemical; however, it is used as a tool in both chemistry and mineralogy.
