Subject - General Chemistry

Usually, migration of an atom, for example hydrogen, or a group, for example a phenyl ring, from one atom to another one within the same molecule, i.e. intramolecular, is considered a rearrangement. Migration between two adjacent atoms is called a 1,2-rearrangement (1,2-shift). Accordingly, migrations between atoms further apart are named 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, etc. rearrangements.
