Many biologically important compounds and compound classes contain the pyrimidine molecule. For example, the pyrimidine derivatives cytosine, thymine and uracil are components of nucleic acids and/or nucleosides and nucleotides. Additionally, derivatives of pyrimidine are frequently found in pharmaceutical products, such as diuretics, antibiotics and vitamins
