phagocytosisZoomA-Z

Subject - Immunology

Phagocytosis is the absorption of solid materials (cells, cell debris, nutrients) out of the surrounding medium in a cell. In this process, the cell membrane surrounds the material and closes itself off into a bubble (vesicle), which can then diffuse through the cell. The absorption of liquid substances is called pinocytosis, both phagocytosis and pinocytosis are subtypes of endocytosis.
