London forceZoomA-Z

Subject - General Chemistry

London dispersion forces are very weak intermolecular forces caused by the attraction of induced dipoles. They are named after the German-American physicist Fritz London and can be described by quantum mechanics.

In liquid and solid aggregated states, London forces play a significant role in holding together uncharged particles or particles without a permanent dipole moment, e.g. in helium.
