The reaction of aldehydes or ketones with an active methylene compound in the presence of a weak base to afford α,β-unsaturated carbonyl or related compounds is named Knoevenagel condensation. This reaction was discovered by Emil Knoevenagel (1865-1921) and is related to the aldol addition, Claisen condensation and malonic ester synthesis.
