The π system of the double bond interacts with the σ bonds of the substituents rendering the alkyl groups on a C=C double bond as electron donors for the π system. This resonance phenomenom is called hyperconjugation.

Interaction between an alkyl group and the empty p orbital of a carbenium ion can show the same effect, e.g. in the SN1 reaction.
