Hashimoto's thyroiditisZoomA-Z

Subject - Biochemistry, Medicine, Immunology

Hashimoto's disease is a chronic autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland leading to symptoms of hypothyroidism, e.g. weight gain, depression, sensitivity to heat and cold , paresthesia, fatigue, muscle weakness, memory loss, infertility and hair loss. Autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase and/or thyroglobulin as well as cellular immune reactions cause gradual destruction of the thyroid gland. Detection of these autoantibodies is used for the clinical diagnosis of the disease.
