halohydrinZoomA-Z

Subject - Organic Chemistry

The compound class of halohydrins is formed by formally substituting one OH group of 1,2-glycols with halogen. The systematic name of this group of compounds is 2-halogen-1-alkanols. They are prepared by addition of hypochloric or hypobromic acid to alkenes. Alkaline agents transform halohydrins into oxiranes.
