Eukaryotic cells have an inner framework, the cytoskeleton, that defines the shape of the cell. In addition to changes in shape and locomotion, the cytoskeleton is also responsible for vesicle transport within the cell and the movement of chromosomes during cell division, among other things. There are three types of filament that make up the cytoskeleton: microfilaments made of actin, microtubules made of tubulin and various intermediate filaments.
