Aromatic compounds have to meet the following requirements:

  1. The molecules are cyclic conjugated, i.e. they contain a continuous π-electron cloud. Each atom in the ring contains one p orbital.
  2. The structures are planar because optimal overlap is only possible this way.
  3. Hückel rule: The number of π electrons of these compounds is 4n+2 electrons with n=0,1,2,3,... .
